CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday directed Haryana government to come up with a policy decision on the fate of 3,206 junior basic trained (JBT) teachers of the state who were appointed in a controversial process in 2000 by the then chief minister Om Prakash Chautala's government. While setting a deadline of May 19, the court asked the state government to take a decision on those teachers considering all aspects and inform it.

On January 8, a single bench of the high court headed by Justice K Kannan had ordered to set aside the selection process of 3,206 JBT teachers selected in 2000 and directed the Haryana government to prepare a fresh merit list within four weeks. Aggrieved by the order, the teachers had filed an appeal before the HC on the grounds that they had been working in the state education department for the past around 14 years and termination of their services at this juncture would adversely affect their family members. They had sough directions to formulate some policy to safeguard their careers at this stage.

On January 22, 2013, a special CBI court Delhi had sentenced O P Chautala and his MLA son Ajay Singh Chautala to 10 years imprisonment for committing irregularities in the selection of these teachers. Court had also convicted 53 other persons, including two IAS officers, and officials of the education department.
